The United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) has announced the 2020-2021 Baseball All-American awards winners today. (June 6, 2021). Wright State Lake Campus is excited to have four of its own baseball student-athletes being honored as All-Americans.
(Graduate Student) Casey Grimm was named Player of the year and also made the USCAA 1st Team All-American Baseball Roster. (Seniors) Layne Riley and Conor Schmitt both made the USCAA 2nd Team All-American roster while teammate, (junior)Ryan Barker made the USCAA Honorable Mention All-American list.
Casey Grimm, a Left Handing Pitcher out of Colerain High School in Cincinnati, Ohio appeared in 9 games. The left-handed pitcher had eight starts and a record of 5 wins and 4 losses. Casey had an ERA of a 2.05 with 75 strike outs which are school records. Casey, at one point was third in the nation with a 1.66 ERA. Casey pitched the only no hitter in Lake Campus History on April 28, 201 vs Roosevelt University-Peoria. In that 9 inning no hit game, Casey struck out 16 batters For his effort in this game. Casey was also the USCAA National Pitcher of the Week, his second such award this season with the other being against Lourdes University Where he threw a complete game with 10 strikeouts on two hits. Casey also batted .295 with an on base percentage of .414 and a slugging percentage of .321. This was an amazing year for Casey Grimm as he was awarded with 1st Team All-American and the only player in Wright State University lake Campus History to Win Player of The Year
Layne Riley, a senior 3B/RHP from Huber Heights Ohio, Wayne High School, was named USCAA 2nd Team All-American. Layne batted a team leading average of .355 along with .453 on base percentage and a .477 slugging percentage which were both 2nd on the team. Layne also led the team with 20 stolen bases, 21 RBI and 3 Homeruns which again were both 2nd on the Team. Layne also tied for the team led with 38 hits and 2nd on the team with 25 runs. Layne will be graduating with a degree in Organizational Leadership.
Conor Schmitt has also been named to the USCAA 2nd Team All-American list. Conor, a Senior from Lebanon High School in Cincinnati Ohio who patrolled the outfield for the Lakers Baseball team. Conor will graduate with a Business Degree from Wright State. This is Conor's 2nd All-American award, as he was a 1st Team All-American during his freshmen year(2018). This spring season(2021) Conor led the Laker Baseball Team in almost every hitting category. His stellar season at the plate listed a team leading batting average of .355, OBP .457 and SLG .579. He tied with the team lead with 38 hitsand also three homeruns. Conor also led the team with 9 doubles, 4 triples and 24 RBI.
Ryan Barker has also been named as a USCAA Team Baseball Honorable All-American. Ryan, #21, a Junior from Fairfield High School in Cincinnati Ohio is a Right-Handed Pitcher. He had 11 pitching appearance with 7 of those being starts. Ryan's had 3 wins and 3 loses with an outstanding ERA of a 2.79 with 34 strike outs, which was 3rd on the team. Ryan is currently majoring in Business.
